Today’s aritificial Christmas tree has been many years in development. There can be no denying the fact that is has a lengthy history which predates the surge in popularity that it experienced in the late part of the last century.

The original artificial tree was made before plastic became a cheap and accessible production material as it is now. Early German artificial trees were made from goose feathers which had been dyed green. Even though people were probably interested in the idea as a novelty, it’s fair to say that the original specimens weren’t so realistic. The original artificial Christmas trees had fake red berries on the end of their branches which doubled up as candle holders, so that trees could be lit before the introduction of fairy lights. In the past, the artificial Christmas tree has been made from aluminium and wood, but today’s versions are nearly always made of 100% plastic. However, increasingly the plastic used in the process is recycled or recyclable.

As is true of other types of fake trees or plants, improved technology and manufacturing expertise has led to the production of increasingly realistic models. Today’s artificial Christmas trees are more realistic than ever, with some even using genuine bark from real trees to make the stem. Almost certainly the boom in popularity of the artificial Christmas tree in the past 30 years has been driven by improved realism.

Every Christmas, a great debate over the environmental virtues of artificial trees arises. Despite the fact that using a fake tree saves a real tree from being cut down every year for a number of years, the fact that the manufacturing process is harmful remains. Overall, a modern recyclable tree which is used year on year and disposed of responsibly is not as environmentally damaging as you might believe.
Those people who are supporters of artificial trees point out that they are convenient and cheaper than real trees. Indeed, whilst it’s true that some areas of the real versus fake debate are hard to call, there is no question here. For the price of a real Christmas tree which can be enjoyed only once, you could buy a quality artificial Christmas tree and enjoy it for many years to come.
