The practice of giving Christmas cards see the average person sending 50 each, which adds up to billions throughout the world. The tradition is one that has gone from strength to strength and the earning potential for card makers in the few weeks before Christmas is huge. Here we look at the tradition of giving Christmas cards, from its inception to modern day options.
Origins
1843 saw the sending of the first commercial card; although some handmade cards may have been sent previously. The card was designed and printed by John Calcott Horsley at the bequest of his friend Sir Henry Cole. Cole sent the design to personal and business acquaintances to bid them a Merry Christmas. The design of the card was somewhat controversial in that part of it depicted a small child attempting to drink from a wine glass. The introduction of Christmas cards was a shrewd move by Cole, who had helped to develop the idea of the Penny Post three years prior.
Different tastes
It is a common misconception today that early Christmas cards focussed on religious themes. The reality is that many designs were aimed at reminding the recipient that spring was just around the corner; making flowers and animals a common theme. Religious themes and more wintery scenes did soon become popular in addition to Christmas cards becoming popular in America thanks to the printer Louis Prang.
Modern day options
The options to those looking to send christmas cards in the modern day have greatly increased and funny cards are especially popular. The option of personalised Christmas cards is another that is greatly increasing in terms of sales. This approach allows the sender to create their own card design through online tools, before ordering. Personalised cards provide a great way to add a bit of fun to the process of sending cards, whilst providing a keepsake to friends and family.
