The design of the card was somewhat controversial in that part of it depicted a small child attempting to drink from a wine glass. The introduction of Christmas cards was a shrewd move by Cole, who had helped to develop the idea of the Penny Post three years prior.

The reality is that many designs were aimed at reminding the recipient that spring was just around the corner; making flowers and animals a common theme.
